    My Pacific Crest Trail Backstory

    July 10, 2021 / 3 Comments

So I thought I’d give a run down of my backstory: how I got to the point of starting the 2650 mile hike that is the Pacific Crest Trail. This post is related to some instagram posts that have been published and will be published over the next week or so. So check that out @justagirlandabackpack.blog on IG or facebook. Since these are already in the form of a photo series on IG, and I wanted to continue that method here, but my phone won’t let me upload photos right now :(( check out my FB for the pics. I’ll fix this when I get home in 4-6 months haha…

Off-the-Beaten-Path Stops on Your Way Through West-Florida

    June 1, 2021 / 1 Comment

In late April 2021, my boyfriend David and I were working our way along the Gulf Coast, down the West Coast of Florida, on our way to South Florida. I thought you all might appreciate some advice on some off-the-beaten-path places to go (or NOT go) if you decide to do your own FL road trip.

A Backcountry Vagina inspired chat Today is Easter Sunday, so happy resurrection to those of you who celebrate and happy spring to those of you who don’t! I have a feeling this is one of the strangest Easters many of us have every experienced, considering COVID-19 has changed the world as we know it. I have a feeling that you might have been a little shocked by the title (and the subtitle!). I was too when I was asked to teach a bunch of new outdoor recreation staff a class about personal care and health in the outdoors. Shocked and excited! I’d always wanted to learn a little bit more…

    ¡CHILE DESPERTÓ!

    November 25, 2019 / 0 Comments

Chile Woke Up! Soooo…this has been an interesting month and a half. For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with your Chilean news (no surprise, it’s one of those places that you may have heard of, but only in passing), Chile has been in a major state of social unrest since October 18th. You might be thinking: “but South America is known for unrest, what’s the big deal?” Well, the truth is, up until recently, Chile has been known as one of the most economically stable countries in Latin America. Even so, Chile has a historical identity centered on marching and protesting for change when they get fed…

    Sleeping Warm in a Tent

    May 5, 2019 / 0 Comments

I sleep cold when I’m backpacking and I always thought it was just because it’s cold out in the wilderness and my body has trouble regulating its temperature. But, after a couple really scary experiences thinking I was going to die because I couldn’t get warm, I realized that that is not normal and I needed to figure out what I was doing wrong and what I could change.  Below are four lists of things you can do to stay warm while backpacking. The first is a list of important things you ought to bring on your trip. The second list is things you should be doing during the day.…

    A Guide to Chilean Language

    April 18, 2019 / 0 Comments

Good morning everyone, hope you’re enjoying the long Semana Santa weekend! Mine has been a bit weird so far… Some of my California friends and I were supposed to head out to Cajón del Maipo for some low-key camping-cum-backpacking before we hop back into the hustle and bustle of the city and classes and internships, but a lot of people had to cancel because we also are in midterm season. Thankfully, one of the gals still wanted to go out, but plans went awry when we got to the end of the 3 hour bus ride and my friend realized someone stole  her wallet :(((( So we hitch hiked back…

    The Girl Behind the Backpack

    March 18, 2019 / 0 Comments

I feel like no good blog is without an About Me section, so here goes: My name is Kirsten (sounds like Kurstin in American English), but in non-English speaking countries I go by Cristina because its easier for others to say. I’m 21 years old. My pronouns are she/her/hers. My maternal grandfather’s Italian heritage shows in my tan skin and curly brown hair, and my father’s mixed-caucasian heritage shows in my green-hazel eyes and 5’7″ height. I am in my third year at the University of California Santa Barbara, although I’m spending the 2019 calendar year in Santiago, Chile studying for two semesters at La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.…
